As of 2009, an estimated 177 million people are living with diabetes worldwide, and a majority of them have type 2 diabetes. Of this population, more than 23 million are in the United States.* Diabetes can lead to serious health complications, including heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, skin and vision disorders, and nerve damage, among others. Fortunately, people living with diabetes can greatly reduce their risk of these complications by adopting healthy behaviors related to nutrition, fitness, weight management and everyday self-care. * World Health Organization, “Facts Related to Chronic Diseases,” 2009. What a Conversation Map® Program Can DoThe Diabetes Conversation Map program gives people living with diabetes the information and peer support that engages them to use what they learn. They come away from the experience with workable plans to make the long-term behavior changes that help them better manage their condition. Because diabetes can greatly differ from person to person, the Diabetes Conversation Map program addresses the needs of people living with type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes and gestational diabetes. Each participant attends the sessions most relevant to his or her own circumstances. In addition, Healthy Interactions has worked with leading diabetes associations to tailor the Diabetes Conversation Map program to the expectations and beliefs of different audiences and cultures all over the world. |
